SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Many on the South Shore are aware of the Celio family and the legacy that lives on through the historic family ranch on South Upper Truckee Road in Meyers.

“You’ve got to count to three.” Those were the words of advice attributed to Norm Woods one of the first five city council members. The Cityhood project in 1965 was spearheaded by the South Lake Tahoe Chamber of Commerce with all five of that first council members coming from the Chamber Board ranks. Norm served as one of the first rotating Mayors and many times thereafter. His advice was offered to the citizens who were newly elected to subsequent councils. I’m thankful for those who paved the way before me, especially our first woman Mayor, Del Laine, who also served many years on the council. One of the best parts of being elected when I was to the council is that I had the special privilege of serving with Del’s daughter Brooke on city council. What a legacy Del Laine left to our community.

Del Laine
Del Laine has left her mark on South Lake Tahoe in ways that many local residents might not know. She was a mover and shaker, whose focus was on making the city a better place. Her most important role, though, was promoting the well-being of women.
This pioneer died Dec. 18, 2020, at home from natural causes, with family at her side. She was 90.
She was born Dolores Mae Wright on March 20, 1930, in Oakland, Calif., to Mabel Paulson and Leslie Wright.
Four years later her parents leased a U.S. Forest Service cabin in Meyers. It became the family summer home and to this day remains part of her legacy. It would be several years before Del would call Lake Tahoe home on a full-time basis, but once she did she never left. Even after having a home in town, Del could be found at the cabin most summers. It was almost like living off the grid.
