Alabama Power Service Organization members gather virtually for annual convention

Members of the Alabama Power Service Organization (APSO) on March 4 celebrated 30 years of volunteerism and meeting the challenge of serving communities during the pandemic at the organization’s first-ever virtual annual convention.
The 45-minute gathering was available for viewing by more than 6,000 member-employees via digital technology.
Zeke Smith, Alabama Power executive vice president for External Affairs, kicked off the convention by congratulating members on their dedicated service to communities across the state. The event was held exactly 30 years after APSO organizers held their first meeting in 1991. That inaugural year, about 300 employees and family members participated in the fledgling organization.

The Alabama Power Youth Leadership Conference went virtual for the first time Thursday, in a very big way.
More than 3,000 students in west and east Alabama watched the event via live stream from their classrooms and homes.
“We certainly miss seeing our students in person this year, but we didn’t want to miss the opportunity to host this program,” said Mark Crews, Alabama Power Western Division vice president. “By going virtual, we were able to have more students in west Alabama participate.”
HBCU Talladega College Receives $150,000 Grant From Alabama Power

Corporations are doing more to help historically Black colleges and universities stay alive, specifically during the COVID-19 pandemic. This week, Alabama Power and its parent operator, Southern Company donated $150,000 to support Talladega College to go towards infrastructure and technology needs for the campus.
