We love our famous, sugary sand beaches, but we also love experiencing the great outdoors in all its wild glory. With the Florida heat and humidity still bearable and school almost out, here’s our annual list of 10 favorite public parks or nature preserves in Sarasota and Manatee counties.
These are places to relax and picnic or perhaps hike and kayak. Located both near and far from our biggest cities, these are oases where beautiful scrub jay and regal osprey dot the blue skies, with waters populated by jumping mullet, mellow manatees and, yes, the occasional alligator!
Thanks to the pandemic, we spent a lot more time exploring during the past year. So, you should find more detailed entries as well as a couple of new ones. Covering places in Sarasota, Venice, Osprey, the UTC area, Bradenton and Palmetto, these parks and nature preserves are presented in alphabetical order.
The vote came at the motion of Palmetto City Commissioner Tamra Varnadore and was approved unanimously moments after Palmetto Mayor Shirley Groover Bryant urged commissioners to select one of the two proposals during the city’s June 7 meeting.
Varnadore said that if the city decided not to sell, it would need to repay an estimated $2 million to the Palmetto Community Redevelopment Board for funds used to purchase and rehabilitate the property, which is a former Brownfield site that once held a gas station. The CRA has long planned to sell the land to reinvest the funds for future projects. I was hoping maybe the county would offer up some funds to work with us, and that is the hard place that the commission and the CRA board is in, Varnadore said. That is something that is going to have to be reconciled before any solutions come up.

A new study led by scientists at the University of Miami (UM) Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science tracked large sharks in Miami and The Bahamas to understand how these migratory animals respond to major storms, like hurricanes.
We now know what happens when large sharks clash with major hurricanes thanks to a new paper released by the University of Miami.
When Hurricane Matthew spun up the east coast of Florida in 2016 scientists were tracking sharks swimming below to see how they responded to the storms. Tiger sharks didn’t seem to mind a storm’s fury while many other species stayed clear.
