Learn how compost can make magic in your garden

Learn how compost can make magic in your garden Audrey Gillespie This Saturday, May 29, from 9 a.m. until noon, the Taylor County Extension Office on the Expo Fairgrounds is the place to be for the Big Country Master Gardener Association’s “Welcome to our Back Yard” workshop. Register for this free event beginning at 8:30 a.m. and enter for a chance to win a cool door prize. Snacks will be provided. Many of my master gardener friends have worked masterfully and tirelessly on the demonstration garden beds at the extension office so that you can see and explore the reality of the garden principles we encourage. On Saturday, you will have the opportunity to be part of our show and tell, with experts in low-maintenance gardening, rainwater harvesting, hardscape/landscape design and raised bed gardens leading the way.

Bring your crape myrtles back from the brink

Bring your crape myrtles back from the brink Audrey Gillespie The bad news is that many of our crape myrtles took a hit during the February freeze this winter. The good news is that most of them will recover completely. Thanks to Texas Tree Surgeons for their generous help with this article. According to them, delayed budding and leafing out is not unexpected. If the trees were healthy before the freeze, they should recover completely, although there may be less new growth and fewer buds.  If no new growth is showing by the end of April, remove all dead wood down to the highest level of living tissue, even if it is at ground level. New shoots will grow back vigorously.
