Once parental leave was contentious, now menstrual leave policies provoke debate

Hill, who is an associate professor of social sciences at the University of Sydney, has been studying menstrual leave as an employment policy for about three years, after stumbling across it while researching gender equality in Southeast Asia. Her research found parallels in arguments for and against menstrual leave as those used to debate parental leave in New Zealand and Australia before its implementation. Critics key concern about menstrual leave, says Hill, is that it may discriminate against people who have periods, reinforcing stereotypes and stigmas attached to menstruation. But its supporters argue menstrual leave is a policy part of a broader movement towards having inclusive workplaces.

SHOW TRANSCRIPT The CDC is saying yes: doctors and nurses can give kids 12-15 years old the Pfizer COVID vaccine.  In Georgia, 12-year-old Jane Ellen Norman was ready to get her shot.  I hope that they all get vaccinated and so we can see each other, she said.  As younger and younger groups get the go-ahead, how these vaccines could interact with other common adolescent vaccines is a concern. The CDC is including guidance language saying health care providers should consider that giving multiple shots at the same time could result in a bad reaction.

The George Floyd Act: Texans Stories of Police Brutality • SJS

May 10, 2021 Guest Submission The George Floyd Act addresses qualified immunity by creating a cause of action for deprivation of rights; requires corroboration for the testimony of undercover police officers; adds a duty to intervene and to render aid; prohibits chokeholds and limits lethal force to imminent threat of serious bodily injury or death. It also ends arrests for many non-jailable fine-only violations and mandates creation of a progressive disciplinary matrix establishing different disciplinary actions for policy violations and violations of law by police. The law would call for these actions to be developed through a statewide process with stakeholders using evidence-based practices.

San Antonio activists take on phony cop unions – Workers World

San Antonio activists take on phony cop ‘unions’ By Shelley Ettinger posted on April 21, 2021 San Antonio Black Lives Matter activists in San Antonio came out April 16 and 17 to demand an end to police killings of Black and Brown people, nationally and locally. The first demonstration, sponsored by the San Antonio Coalition for Police Accountability, Fix SAPD and others, was focused on Proposition B. This referendum on the May 1 ballot would cancel collective bargaining rights for so-called police “unions,” eliminating contract provisions that shield cops from discipline or firing even for the most horrendous acts.  Activists, including members of several unions, picketed outside the San Antonio Central Labor Council’s meeting. Shamefully, the SACLC opposes Prop B to the point of going door to door to urge people to vote it down. That very day, San Antonio cops had killed two people sitting in their car during a traffic stop.
