KTOY The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center is hosting the first statewide virtual 5K “Spring Spawning Run” to celebrate the fish spawning season and recognize the importance of state fish hatchery efforts to enhance the fisheries resources and fishing opportunities for more than two million anglers in Texas.
This year’s 5k run will take place virtually the entire month of May, which means participants can show their support from anywhere in the state at their own pace.
“This is a fun and healthy opportunity to get outdoors and show your support for Texas’ fisheries resources during the important spring spawning season,” said Tom Lang, Director of the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center. “I know that I plan to work in my 5K with my family as we hike to some of our favorite fishing spots.”

ATHENS, TX – The 2021 Toyota ShareLunker collection season will go in the books as one of the best in the history of the program. Anglers landed 23 ShareLunkers at 10 different lakes across the state, the most during a January through March timespan since the 1995 season which produced 27. Five new lake records were established, four lakes made their mark on the program with a first ever entry, and milestone ShareLunker 600 was caught in this year’s group.
“This Toyota ShareLunker collection season was simply historic in so many ways, we live for seasons like this,” said Tom Lang, Director of the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center. “We’re grateful that so many anglers caught their fish of a lifetime this season and then decided to share their lunker with us so we can make more of these bigger better bass for future generations of anglers.”
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department partners with education based organizations to teach kids how to fish
The goal is to increase fishing knowledge and strengthen family bonds and a connection to the outdoors

The Texas Freshwater Fisheries center in Athens, near Tyler, has partnered with the non-profit ‘Fishing’s Future’ and the ‘Vamos A Pescar Education Fund’ to provide convenient fishing education opportunities for families throughout Texas.
The goal of the program is to increase fishing knowledge and strengthen family bonds with a connection to the outdoors.
The educational program runs through the end of May and has a variety of different activities to participate in.
