AUSTIN Voting rights, gun rights, critical race theory and abortion restrictions captured headlines during the 140-day regular session of the Texas Legislature. But lawmakers also dealt with or failed to deal with a variety of other issues.
Efforts to expand legalized gambling gained no ground in spite of intensive and expensive lobbying by casino operators, but neither did efforts to expand Medicaid coverage for low-income Texans.
The contentious session included a walkout by House Democrats that broke quorum and killed for now an elections bill opponents labeled “voter suppression” and proponents described as ensuring “election integrity.” But in the process, they made a special session virtually certain. ....

DMX Bared His Sins and Soul to Make His Music a T...

Earl “DMX” Simmons kept it real whether he was testifying about his angels or his demons.
While it’s common for grief, depression, anxiety, and faith to come up in popular music today, Simmons rose to fame at a time when hip-hop songs about flashy cars, jewelry, and expensive clothes ruled the charts. The rapper best known by his stage name DMX shot videos in his childhood neighborhood wearing workman’s jumpsuits and few gold chains.
Simmons who died last week at age 50 is the first and only rapper to have five albums debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, and he did so while making Christianity a central element of his music. DMX’s witness over his 30-year career reshaped how the genre engages faith in public. ....

The gambling empire Las Vegas Sands is pressing forward with its ambitious drive to bring casinos to Texas after a series of recent developments, including the death of its CEO, Republican megadonor Sheldon Adelson,
have called into question how much momentum remains behind the cause.
The company made waves in Austin late last year as it built a high-powered lobby team and made clear it saw Texas as its next big expansion opportunity the biggest plum still waiting in the industry. But since then, Comptroller Glenn Hegar released a fiscal forecast for the state that was much better than expected, quieting what had been mounting conversations about how gambling could be a new tax revenue source for the state. Then came the death of Adelson, the famous chairman, founder and ....

The casino empire helmed by GOP megadonor Sheldon Adelson is zeroing in on Texas.
Las Vegas Sands, among the world’s largest gaming companies, has set its sights on legalizing casinos in the state with a stable of high-powered lobbyists for the upcoming legislative session and on Tuesday, a public acknowledgment of its ambitions.
Andy Abboud, Las Vegas Sands’ top lobbyist, said the company was pursuing Texas as one of only a few expansion opportunities, along with places like Japan, Brazil and New York.
“We view Texas as a worldwide destination and one of the top potential markets in the entire world,” Abboud said during a conference hosted by the Texas Taxpayers and Research Association. “Texas is considered the biggest plum still waiting to be out there in the history of hospitality and gaming.” ....
