FORT WORTH (CN) – A crowded field of 23 candidates made their final push Friday on the eve of a special election to replace Texas Congressman Ron Wright, the first sitting member of Congress to die after contracting Covid-19.

th Congressional District is being closely watched nationwide over Democrats’ progress in the traditionally red state since last year’s election of President Joe Biden. The district has long been a Republican stronghold, but has slowly become more blue as formerly rural areas in the district become more suburban.

Ron Wright is dead after battling cancer and testing positive for
COVID-19. Wright s family confirmed the congressman passed away on Sunday evening. The 67-year-old was hospitalized in September due to complications with his cancer treatment and tested positive for coronavirus a few weeks ago. Wright, a Republican, was first elected to his seat during the 2018 midterm election and won re-election last November. Wright s office released a statement saying Ron maintained his quick wit and optimism until the very end.

U.S. Rep. Ron Wright, who rose through the ranks of Tarrant County and Republican politics to represent North Texas in Congress, died Sunday at age 67.
Wright is the first sitting member of Congress to die after contracting COVID-19. He was being treated for lung cancer when he tested positive for the coronavirus.
The official cause of death wasn t immediately released; he and his wife were admitted to a Dallas hospital in recent weeks with COVID-19. Wright announced in January that he had tested positive.
A statement issued by Wright s Congressional office said he “will be remembered as a constitutional conservative. He was a statesman, not an ideologue.” Wright fought “for individual freedom, Texas values, and above all, the lives of the unborn.”
