NRL 2021: Canterbury Bulldogs contracts, Phil Gould s recruitment calls

Phil Gould comes online as Bulldogs football manager as of Monday, with 13 off-contract players and a dozen open roster spots his first priority. Gould s return to the club he coached to a title more than 30 years ago begins via Zoom due to Sydney s latest COVID-19 outbreak, and there is no clear answer on when he will actually meet Canterbury players face-to-face. Critical calls on several of their futures will likely come before then. As well as having nearly half of Trent Barrett s top-30 roster unsigned beyond this season (only South Sydney has more than the Bulldogs 13 off-contract top squad members), Canterbury will look to bring talks with Tevita Pangai jnr to a head in coming days.

NRL 2021: Canterbury Bulldogs, Josh Jackson, troops back for Storm as Bulldogs keep simple focus

Bulldogs skipper Josh Jackson says he was not a fan of watching on in round four but is stinging to return alongside Luke Thompson and Dallin Watene-Zelezniak to drag his club out of a rut. The task couldn t be much bigger against the in-form Storm in Melbourne but Jackson believes the team should take encouragement from a strong start against Souths. It was tough, it was only the second one I ve missed so it was a strange feeling, Jackson told NRL.com. It was tough obviously watching it. I thought we started the game really well though. Just a few little periods let us down in the first half. I thought we started the second half OK then obviously the second half [of the half] was pretty tough to watch.

NRL Early Mail: Turbo eyes return in new position

Thursday 8 April, Stadium Australia, 7:50pm Rabbitohs: Without both Cody Walker and Keaon Koloamatangi due to suspension. Walker is out due to a striking ban with Benji Marshall to fill in at five-eighth. Koloamatangi was charged with a grade two crusher tackle and has copped a two-week suspension with Jacob Host expected to come onto the left edge. Liam Knight is unavailable due to ongoing issues with concussion. Hame Sele is available for selection after recovering from a rib injury after returning to full training this week. Broncos: Have their own issues with Patrick Carrigan out for a week due to a grade one crusher tackle. Tevita Pangai will start at lock with John Asiata returning on the bench. Either Tom Dearden or Brodie Croft will start at halfback and it will be interesting to see if Kevvie Walters continues to run with one of them on his bench like he has for the past two weeks.
