The Old Globe today announced plans for the long-awaited full reopening of its three theatres in Balboa Park. Audiences will be able to once again gather in the Globe s outdoor theatre starting June 4 and in the two indoor theatres in September. A full lineup of virtual and in-person theatre, boasting five world premieres, offers something for everyone, from musicals, Shakespeare, and new plays to movies, cabarets, family events, immersive storytelling, and more. To say that there’s more than meets the eye when observing the artwork of
Baseera Khan would be an understatement. Deep within the materials Khan uses in multidisciplinary projects are both inner explorations and experiences with and within a complex world.
“I think about material and its production and infrastructure and how it influences economies,” said Khan, who is the current artist-in-residence at
Lux Art Institute in Encinitas and whose works are on exhibit there through June 5. Khan said of the creative process: “I think about some geopolitical things, some historical timelines, and then I hone in on the material based on how it actually creates identity.”

Despite the challenges of social distancing, San Diego’s dance community is working to sustain its organizations while using film to inspire everyone from the grieving to the hopeful.
“Dancers and artists aren’t necessarily first responders,” explains Zaquia Mahler Salinas, artistic director of Disco Riot, the nonprofit that “exists to elevate a collaborative art culture.”
“But maybe they come in as second responders in terms of how different kinds of art can support people in finding lightness or ways of processing their experiences.”
Disco Riot is producing “A Year of DisDANCE,” a collection of six dance films by local choreographers that will be screened today at Cinema Under the Stars and Tuesday online.
