Classes of 2021: Travis High School awards diplomas to 29 graduates

Twenty-nine Travis High School of Choice seniors filed down the aisle of Paris Junior High School’s Weger Auditorium on Thursday, and just more than a half-hour later, 29 graduates walked off stage into the open arms of friends and family. Standing ovations and loud cheers echoed throughout the auditorium as seniors’ names were called to accept their diploma from Paris ISD Superintendent Paul Jones after hearing from Lamar County Chamber of Commerce President Paul Allen. Allen touched on opportunities the graduates can chase, and he lamented one of the costs of the Covid-19 pandemic — the loss of connecting students with local businesses.

Paris ISD to host Covid-19 vaccine clinic for eligible students

On Friday, Paris ISD will join forces with Honey Grove’s Puckett Family Clinic to provide 12- to 18-year-old students with Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccinations. The vaccinations will take place at Paris High and Paris Junior High, but they will also be open to students from Travis High School of Choice and Crockett Intermediate School. For students to receive a vaccination, they must have a signed permission slip from their parents and must have filled out all requisite forms. Only the Pfizer vaccine has been approved for children between the ages of 12 and 18 years old, and the nearest supplier of Pfizer vaccines is Puckett Clinic, school officials said. Though some students have already driven with their parents to receive the Pfizer vaccine in Honey Grove, Paris ISD wanted to ensure all students had access to the vaccine.

Fisher to continue as PISD board president

George Fisher will continue to serve as president of the Paris ISD Board of Trustees while Jenny Wilson will continue on as vice president after the board’s reorganization Monday. Becki Norment will continue in her role as board secretary. The reorganization was required after Wilson, Place 6 trustee, and Fisher, Place 1 trustee, took their oaths of office. Without any challengers in the May election, both trustees retained their seats for another term. Their terms now expire in May 2024. Prior to reorganization, the board accepted the resignation of Place 4 trustee Mihir “Mark” Pankaj, who was elected to the board in 2020, as he successfully sought election to Paris City Council. His resignation also triggered a need to fill his spot on the Distinguished Graduate Awards Selection Committee. Norment already serves on the committee, and she will be joined by Place 7 Trustee Bert Strom.
