Allbirds sets regenerative wool goals

Allbirds sets regenerative wool goals US footwear brand Allbirds has committed to sourcing 100% of its wool from regenerative sources by 2025. The direct-to-consumer shoe brand will launch its first products made from the sustainable fibre within the next year, and will work with existing suppliers to meet its goal to shift sourcing entirely by the middle of the decade. The new commitments target Allbirds’ most resource-intensive natural material: Merino wool accounts for about a quarter of the natural materials the company uses, but 80% of emissions related to natural materials. The ambition to change its sourcing practices supports efforts to ensure the company’s wool supply is carbon neutral another 2025 target. Allbirds will look to achieve this through regenerative agriculture, a natural farming technique that has the potential to extract carbon out of the atmosphere, which is then absorbed back into the land.

M&S: Supporting people in supply chain

M&S: Supporting people in the supply chain With the people that work in a retailer’s supply chain key to its success, Marks & Spencer has been focusing on improving the lives of those who work to make its products. Speaking at the Drapers Sustainable Fashion conference, M&S’s ethical trading manager, Lydia Hopton, outlined the steps that the UK high street stalwart has been taking to help those within its supply chain. With M&S s supply network for the clothing and home division spanning 41 countries, Hopton admitted that Covid-19 had put the retailer’s supply chain “under huge pressure”. Nevertheless,  it remained committed to its ethical approach, and to supporting suppliers and their workforces throughout.

How to use data to define your sustainability strategy

How to use data to define your sustainability strategy Clear, focused data is key to implementing a strong sustainability policy, the Drapers Sustainable Fashion conference heard this morning. Disparate data Jasmine Chilton, sustainability analyst at Leaf Sustainability, explained that disparate and out-of-date data can hinder a company s attempts to address sustainability concerns: “Disparate data sources mean poor accessibility in any business, the information you need can be located in many different places and many different forms, maybe they are in spreadsheet, iCloud, Word document, or maybe you have too many sources of data.” Chilton added: Data latency can also be a problem. The time frame of starting the process of data collection and presentation can be so long that by the time you finish the process the data is already out of data. Gold standard visibility requires continuous data collection, which will ultimately give you sustainability information you can act on
