Old memories of Yongsan Garrison
Posted : 2021-02-07 17:48 By Choe Chong-dae
It has been 50 years since my first visit to Yongsan Garrison in the early 1970s. I was there to attend a welcoming reception in honor of a senior United Nations Command (UNC) official. Arriving at the main gate of the base, I explained to a security guard that I was going to the UNC party at Hartell House, an officers club on South Post, and showed the invitation.
However, he called the secretary of the general hosting the party and asked him to escort me to Hartell House because I looked so young as a man in his early 20s. I managed to join the reception on time and had the honor of meeting many distinguished guests who were diplomats, Korean government officials and UNC delegates.

The number of severely ill patients was up to 159. Although 973 was considered a high daily total in December, a third wave of the virus reached a record high of 2,447 new patients on Jan. 7, according to metro government data. The seven-day rolling average of new daily cases on Tuesday stood at 1,088.
. TOKYO Another seven of Japan’s prefectures, including the center of the main island of Honshu, fell under an emergency declaration Thursday aimed at stifling a record-breaking coronavirus surge. The U.S. military, which has more than seven installations across the country’s main islands, as of 6 p.m. Wednesday reported 12 people recently infected with the virus, including two at a Defense Department elementary school at Yokosuka Naval Base. U.S. Forces Korea reported 10 new infections Tuesday and Wednesday, most of them at a base in Seoul. The government coronavirus advisory board on Wednesday approved expanding a week-old state of emergency in and around Tokyo to include Osaka, Hyogo, Kyoto, Aichi, Gifu, Fukuoka and Tochigi prefectures, according to public broadcaster NHK.
