Was the coronavirus pandemic an issue in Bengal elections?
The COVID-19 pandemic, and the response from both the state and centre, has been missing from the political rhetoric from either side. Part of the reason is that the official figures peg the total cases in the state at a little over 800,000 and the deaths at over 11,000. However, there is no dearth of anecdotes on how the data from the state, too, may be under-reported just like in other states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
Both TMC and BJP have been negligent, to say the least, in recent months as they went about holding political rallies where the guidelines like social distancing and wearing masks were all but ignored. The cases have seen significant increase in both infections and fatality.
Why BJP is likely to fall short in Bengal
Despite working up a winning momentum, the party is likely to fall short of the halfway mark in the state

Having spent the last one month in Bengal, it is clear to me that BJP is set to emerge as the main opposition party. BJP supporters may not like this but the ground reality is that the party will actually find it difficult to cross double digits. Psephologists on the ground put the possible range of seats for the BJP between 80 and 95 in the Assembly of 294. My own impression is it will be on the lower side.

DIAMOND HARBOUR: The Trinamool Congress is fighting hard to retain the seven assembly segments in Diamond Harbour constituency, represented by TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee in the Lok Sabha.
Apart from a surge in BJP s support base, allegations of corruption in Amphan relief seemed to be a cause of concern for the TMC, despite the fact that Banerjee, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee s nephew had won the 2019 Lok Sabha elections by more than 3.2 lakh votes.

NEW DELHI: The stage is set for the busiest day of the ongoing election season with all the five states/UT West Bengal, Kerala, Assam, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry going to polls on April 6.
The polling will be held in a single-phase in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry while Assam will witness its third and final round of voting on Tuesday. In Bengal, this will be the third round in the eight-phase elections ending April 29.
