This Key Barrier to Experimenting on America s Youngest Humans Is Now at Risk

ANALYSIS Under the Biden administration, longstanding protections for innocent human life have come under unprecedented attack, with major battles happening in Congress now as Democrats push to eliminate key pro-life policies like the Hyde Amendment from their spending proposals. Will President Biden, Senator Schumer, and Speaker Pelosi follow the precedent set by every president and Congress since 1996 and support another key pro-life policy – the prohibition of taxpayer funding for inhumane experiments on embryos … the youngest human lives? Millions of vulnerable young lives – unborn humans – have been exploited for experiments and then destroyed in the name of science.  But every year since 1996, Republican and Democratic Congresses and presidents have demonstrated a bipartisan consensus that American taxpayers should not be forced to fund these controversial, unethical experiments on human embryos by passing the Dickey-Wicker Amendment. This bipartisan policy should co

Biden Budget Would Scrap Decades of Consensus on Not Funding Abortion

President Joe Biden released his budget proposal on May 28 as Americans headed into the long Memorial Day weekend. The “unreasonable and irresponsible” measure, as my Heritage Foundation colleague Matthew Dickerson described it, calls for dizzying amounts of spending across the federal government, paid for by American taxpayers. Modern biomedical breakthroughs require a federal ethics commission

In 1978, the birth of the world s first test-tube baby led to debates over the use of embryos in research for in vitro fertilization. These questions were reviewed by the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare’s now-defunct Ethics Advisory Board. Two decades later, scientific discussion related to cloning and the use of human embryonic stem cells led to additional questions about what research is permissible and what should considered be unethical, which were addressed by President Bill Clinton The Biden administration should also form a national bioethics commission to study and make recommendations related to issues raised by biomedical research. One area of concern that should be addressed is lab-developed models of embryos.
