In female-led I m Your Woman, Julia Hart flips the 70s crime genre on its head | Movies

Five years ago, while she watched and rewatched 1970s and ‘80s crime genre classics, certain scenes lingered with filmmaker Julia Hart: the moment the study doors close on Diane Keaton’s Kay in “The Godfather,” shutting her out of her husband’s inner circle; how Tuesday Weld’s Jessie is abruptly shuffled into a car in the dead of night and sent away from the action, an infant in her arms, in “Thief.” Female characters in movies like these often exist in service to a male protagonist’s story – when they aren’t pushed out of the narrative completely. (Or rendered mostly silent, as in Martin Scorsese’s more recent “The Irishman.”) Devouring these films with her husband, co-writer and producer Jordan Horowitz, shortly after the birth of their first child, Hart wondered about the women left to the margins of the stories on-screen.

Review | Julia Hart s atmospheric I m Your Woman features a first class leading lady in Rachel Brosnahan

Updated: 1:33 PM CST December 14, 2020 ST. LOUIS Imagine your husband walking through the front door with a baby. But not just any baby, this kid belonged to someone else first. But he s yours until the next end, wherever that ll be. This is life for Jean (Rachel Brosnahan) as we meet her in the early going of I m Your Woman, Julia Hart s thrillingly alive new drama. This is the road movie that I wasn t quite ready for, but was properly swept up by within minutes. Certain movies carry a lived-in aesthetic. In other words, the way they look, sound, and blast off the screen at your eyes comes off as relative and authentic. We can understand and get into Jean s predicament, because we think we know her, and that s all Brosnahan working her magic once again.

I m Your Woman movie review: Rachel Brosnahan is Marvelous Mrs Mobster in Julia Hart s crime thriller

languageEnglish Gender roles in gangster movies are as sacrosanct as the omertà. For all intents and purposes to say the least. Traditionally, the men are out collecting protection money, doing shady deals in nightclubs, and torturing a suspected rat who broke their vaguely defined but inviolable code of honour. Meanwhile, the women they leave behind take care of the household. They are forced to operate like props in the background, slowly becoming one with the wallpaper. The agency they exercise is mostly limited to being a nagging conscience, like Diane Keaton in  The Godfather. Even then, they have little to no impact on the men s decisions or the narrative itself.
