Wee Willie Keeler had a saying, Hit me where they ain t, and today, there are big holes in the infield where worm burners can get through but the shiftless Yankees are not taking advantage of these shifts; how do you fix a line-up that is fixated with the long ball is a good question with this mentality that four baggers rather then a higher batting average brings big bucks into the pockets of the players?
I grew up with the DiMaggio Yankees who won many championships without a dominate pitcher, like Cleveland had with Bob Feller, and with hitters who were more concerned with batting averages and RBI s. The sportscaster, Mel Allen, gave the name of old reliable to Yankee outfielder, Tommy Heinrich, because of his ability to come through when the chips were down and that term of reliability actually pervaded the entire team.
