Blue Jays birthdays: Rick Cerone

Blue Jays birthdays: Rick Cerone Share this story Rick Cerone turns 67 today. Cerone was an original John Lowenstein, four months and one day before their first game, sending Rico Carty to Cleveland for him. We had taken Carty from Cleveland in the expansion draft and would get him back in March of 1978. Cerone played in our first ever game, going 2 for 4 with a double in our win over the White Sox (in the snow). He played four games in that first week before being sent down to AAA. He came back for a game in May and then was up for good in mid-August. He hit .200/.245/.270 in 31 games.

Top 60 All-Time Jays: #5 Tony Fernandez

Top 60 All-Time Jays: #5 Tony Fernandez Share this story Tony Fernandez (born Octavio Antonio Fernandez Castro) was born June 30th, 1962, in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic. He was signed as an amateur free agent by the Jays in 1979. The Jays, back then, scouted the Dominican pretty thoroughly; we signed several players from there. The Jays called Tony up when the rosters expanded in September 1983 and got into a handful of games. He was called up to the Jays for good at the end of May 1984, at first splitting time with veteran Alfredo Griffin and slowly taking over the position as the season went on. He also played some third base. A switch hitter, he had a pretty decent rookie season, hitting .270/.317/.356 in 88 games.

Having been fortunate enough to see them all, I thought it would be an easy project to put together the ten most important moments. It wasn’t. After starting with a list from memory, I expanded it with some internet research and eventually came up with 22 games, plays, and special moments. It also revived a lot of memories. George Brett was a special player. Bo Jackson was a special player. Those 2015 Royals were a joy to watch and Lorenzo Cain and Eric Hosmer always seemed to be present in the biggest moments. I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I did putting it together.

Top 60 All-Time Greatest Blue Jays: #47 Damaso Garcia Share this story Damaso Domingo Garcia Sanchez| 2B | 1980-1986 Damaso Garcia was born February 7, 1955, in Moca, Dominican Republic. As a young man, he was more into soccer than baseball. He was captain for the Dominican Republic’s national soccer team at the Central American and Caribbean Games in 1974. The Yankees signed him as an amateur free agent in 1975 as players from the Dominica Republic weren’t included in the amateur draft. Damaso got up to the majors for a few games in 1978 and 1979, but the Yankees had Willie Randolph, and Garcia wasn’t going to move him off second base. The Yankees traded him,
