County government officials in New York are collecting strategies for how best to incentivize people to get their COVID-19 vaccination as more than half of New Yorkers age 18 and older have completed the vaccination series.
The New York State Association of Counties and the State Association of County Health Officials in a joint effort on Tuesday announced plans to catalogue the various vaccine incentive plans on the local government, which have ranged from free beer and food to tickets to sporting events. Following the announcement by the Centers for Disease Control that fully vaccinated people no longer need to wear masks or practice physical distancing in the majority of situations, Democratic New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is not ready to give his blessings to the idea.
“In New York, we have always relied on the facts and the science to guide us throughout the worst of this pandemic and in our successful reopening,” he said. “We have received the newly revised guidance from the CDC regarding mask wearing and social distancing for those with vaccinations and are reviewing them in consultation with Dr. Zucker and our partners and health experts in surrounding states.”

County leaders on Wednesday renewed their push for direct federal aid as top congressional lawmakers signaled they were also stepping up efforts to help local governments recoup the billions of dollars lost during the pandemic.
The push from the New York State Association of Counties this year also comes as the chances of another COVID-19 stimulus package have improved with Democrats poised to gain narrow control of the U.S. Senate.
New York Sen. Chuck Schumer is in line to become majority leader of a 50-50 Senate, with incoming Vice President Kamala Harris casting the tie-breaking vote. Schumer, along with Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, backed legislation on Wednesday designed to aid local governments.
