Eight people were trapped after a garage collapsed Friday afternoon in the City of Dunkirk. The two-car garage collapse happened at 4:55 p.m. at 21 St. Hedwigs Avenue, where one person managed to escape before the Dunkirk Fire Department arrived. Six others were helped through a window by firefighters. Another person, however, was pinned under a beam and required a lengthy extrication, according to the fire department.

Submitted Photo The sound of something beeping, coming from an unknown source and location, set into motion a chaotic evening for Dunkirk resident Susie Dorsett who’s convinced her life was saved by one of her best friends. “I couldn’t have made it out without her. She saved me,” Dorsett said of the actions Tuesday by Deborah White. The two were with Dawn White at Deborah’s home on Lord Street in Dunkirk playing cards like they have done several times before.

Photo by Dan Kohler Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Department fire investigators are looking into the cause of a Saturday evening barn fire that destroyed the structure and then started a blaze in the grass and woods nearby in Pomfret. Fredonia Fire Department, Dunkirk Fire Department and several other companies were dispatched to the fully involved fire around 9:15 p.m. Saturday at 8799 Concord Drive. Rich Telford of the county fire investigation team said officers were at the scene Sunday morning to try and determined the cause. Concord Drive is located between Maytum Road and Fredonia-Stockton Road.
