Lam Thye: State depts, highway authorities must come up with multi-pronged approach to reduce roadkill

PETALING JAYA: There should be a multi-pronged approach by state departments and highway authorities to ensure fewer animals get killed on our roads, says Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye. Responding to the recent slew of roadkill, the Alliance for Safe Community chairman said this was due to decades of encroachment into wildlife habitats. The issue, he said, needed consideration and collaboration between highway authorities, the Works Ministry and state wildlife departments to work out a solution. A Star Metro report on Thursday (May 6) reported that more than 100 wild animals have been killed in accidents in Johor since 2019. This included seven tapirs that were killed since January this year.

MERSING (Bernama): The Johor Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) has rescued a 300kg female tapir caught in a trap set at Felda Tenggaroh 5 here Wednesday (April 29). Its director Salman Saaban said the trap had been set since Feb 17 following complaints from the public about the tapir - said to be in poor health - that was often seen roaming around the area. We received a complaint that the tapir had entered the trap at about 8.30am and the rescue operation was carried out by a 12-member team from Mersing Perhilitan, the Jemaluang Wildlife Conservation Centre and the Johor Elephant Sanctuary.
