As federal relief money flowed into local governments to help cover the costs of responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, several police departments in Minnesota spent emergency funding on riot gear, Tasers, body cameras and other civil unrest equipment.
5 INVESTIGATES identified the purchases in a review of more than 1,400 spending reports from cities, towns and counties, which detailed their use of funding received through the Coronavirus Aid Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act.
Those expenses could potentially be flagged during upcoming audits since the federal government made it clear that such funding could only be used to cover expenditures due to the public health emergency.

Big Lake Police Chief Drives Off Without Paying For Gas
I can t count how many times I ve almost done this. You fill your car with gas and get distracted by something and start to drive off. Luckily, I ve caught myself before the gas station has to call the police.
There is a pretty funny story on the Big Lake Police Dept Facebook page and it involves none other than the Big lake Police Chief, Joel Scharf.

Turns out while a Big Lake Police Officer was having a snack inside the Big Lake Kwik Trip, an employee approached him and asked if she could discuss a drive off that had happened recently? Seems someone drove off without paying for their gas. But, who was it?

Police Chief Joel Scharf posted the light hearted message on the department s Facebook page showing that everyone is human and makes mistakes. He stopped in at the Kwik Trip to get fuel and a snack. The manager told the chief that they needed to discuss a gas drive off. He was then handed a photo of the vehicle and suspect. The photo was of him and his police car at the gas pump. He was distracted talking on his cell phone and drove off without paying.
This must have been a little awkward when Kwik Trip saw that it was the police who in fact were the guilty party here. Fortunately the police department was able to crack this case.
