Melissa Fathallah erinnert sich noch genau an die Stromkabel, die am Abend des 4. Augusts 2020 überall im Stadtviertel Gemmayzeh unweit des Hafens von Beirut herunterhingen. «Sie sahen aus wie die schwarzen Tentakel eines Monsters», sagt sie. Menschen lagen zwischen Trümmern und Autowracks in Blutlachen. Es war ein Albtraum aus Rot und Schwarz, Stöhnen und Schreien, durch den Fathallah sich ihren Weg bahnen musste.

After decades of on and off negotiations and failed peace initiatives and as Israel continues to block the emergence of a sovereign and viable Palestinian state, it is time for a shift in U.S. policy toward Palestinian-Israeli peacemaking.
Yet how can this U.S. administration help change the political calculations of Palestinians and Israelis, alter the negative trajectory of realities on the ground, and rebuild prospects for a durable peace?
In a recent paper entitled “
Breaking the Israel-Palestine Status Quo,” Marwan Muasher, Zaha Hassan, and Daniel Levy, called for a new U.S. approach to the conflict that prioritizes the rights and human security of Palestinians and Israelis. The paper outlines some of the principal policy options that could be derived from a rights-based approach in addressing the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

The next frontier - Human development and the Anthropocene, that was globally launched in December 2020, shows that we are at an unprecedented moment in history. Human activity has become a dominant force shaping the planet. Because the impact interacts with existing inequalities, threatening significant development reversals, the report argues in favor of a great transformation – in how we live, work and cooperate – to change the path we are on. In this sense, the next frontier for human development is to work with nature, not against it.
How should we react to this new age? Do we choose to strike out on bold new paths striving to continue human development while easing planetary pressures? Or do we choose to try and ultimately fail to go back to business as usual and be swept into a dangerous unknown?
