Valencia County Fire Department announces burn ban for unincorporated areas, all municipalities

Valencia County Fire Department announces burn ban for unincorporated areas, all municipalities Due to ongoing drought and severe fire danger Valencia County, village of Los Lunas, city of Belen, town of Peralta, village of Bosque Farms and city of Rio Communities are implementing an open burn ban effective Friday, June 18. The ban on open burning will remain in effect for 30 days or until the area receives a sufficient amount of precipitation that reduces the fire danger, at which time the departments will reevaluate the need for the open burn restrictions and update as appropriate. The open burn ban restricts any and all outdoor fires such as weed burning, cooking fires and bonfires.

Community garden gets funding

Just when it looked like a community garden project on Valencia County’s east side was going to whither away, a $30,000 grant from CYFD gave it another year of life. Days after Valencia County commissioners unanimously voted to not provide $15,000 for the Eastern Valencia Urban Gardens Program, administered by the staff of the Valencia Soil and Water Conservation District, the award of the CYFD grant was announced. “We had applied for it, thinking of it as our Plan B,” said VSWCD district director Andrew Hautzinger. “Who could imagine the county wouldn’t fund it?” He continued, saying the district was relieved to get the grant, which would give the program another year to look for more permanent funding.

County to reconsider Don Felipe Road weight ordinance

The Valencia County Commission will consider repealing an ordinance that put a weight limit on vehicles using Don Felipe Road. At the Feb. 17 commission meeting, Los Lunas attorney Josh Jimenez said he and the businesses he represents were asking the commission to take the extraordinary step of repealing the ordinances because so many are businesses affected. “Each of them is affected by the ordinance — meaning they would be forced to comply with the ordinance — and it would negatively impact each of the businesses,” Jimenez said. At issue for the businesses, such as Castillo Prestress, Spartan Towing, Pete’s Pro Truck and Auto Repair and Barela Farms, is the restriction of trucks weighing five tons or more from using Don Felipe Road.
