Leonie Jackson, 50, was pulled from the waves at Congo Beach near Moruya on the NSW south coast on Sunday afternoon and died a short time later, police said. She had gone into the water to rescue her 10-year-old son who was stuck in a rip, according to police.

A day after celebrating her 50th birthday with friends and family, Leonie Jackson died saving her son from a rip while swimming at the beach on the NSW Far South Coast.
Ms Jackson had taken her two children for a walk along Congo Beach, south of Moruya, on Sunday when the boys decided to go for a swim.
Leonie Jackson had just celebrated her 50th birthday, with her children and co-parents Alex Jones and Paul Harrison, before she drowned on the Far South Coast on Sunday.

By the time the boys got into the water, the wind and swell had changed direction and was pulling them further out. Ms Jackson urged them to come back to shore but her youngest began to struggle and she swam out to him.
