Print Care for La Jolla’s parks and open spaces, as well as those across San Diego City Council District 1, took center stage at Councilman Joe LaCava’s budget town hall May 12. The online meeting was intended to collect feedback on Mayor Todd Gloria’s $1.73 billion draft budget. It was one of two scheduled town halls; the second was held the morning of May 15. Requests for rangers, maintenance of existing facilities and capital improvement projects in shoreline parks were raised in hopes that they will be funded in the 2021-22 fiscal year that starts July 1. The group’s departing president, Ann Dynes, provided an update at its Jan. 25 meeting online. She explained that the city sought the counsel of the city attorney and Parks & Recreation Department in the fall after two board members Mary Ellen Morgan and Marie Hunrichs made controversial comments about the Black Lives Matter movement and the city’s decision not to remove chalk writings in support of the movement on the Fay Avenue Bike Path. ....
The year 2020 brought more questions than most of us were prepared for: When can concerts resume? Did my favorite restaurant close? Should I wear a mask? The list goes on and on. We asked the leaders of La Jolla’s civic and cultural institutions two more questions, this time about the new year, 2021. Many of them agree that weathering the COVID-19 storm is paramount, along with supporting local businesses, children, senior citizens and arts and culture organizations. Here’s what they had to say: What is the biggest issue facing La Jolla in 2021? San Diego City Councilman Joe LaCava (Courtesy) ....
