By 3.30 pm, when time came to wrap up the camp, only nine people had been tested in the village of approximately 2,800 residents. Of these, seven were members and staff associated with the district and village administration, who underwent the test to convince the villagers it was a safe exercise.

My colleagues and I had spent a few days investigating India’s oxygen crisis. One of the startling facts we found was that it had taken the Narendra Modi government eight months after the pandemic began to invite bids for 162 oxygen generation plants. Most still weren’t up and running.

Uttar Pradeshâs official Covid-19 figures Wednesday was 33,106, the second highest in the country after Maharashtra’s 67,468, and 187 deaths.
In capital Lucknow, some private hospitals Wednesday evening asked attendants to shift out their patients to other centres, after they ran out of medical oxygen. While medical oxygen was supplied to a few of them after frantic SOS calls, the situation continues to be precarious across the state.
