New Canaan parents say they are upset with the “lack of communication” between them and the schools in regards to changes to school start times.Grace Duffield / Hearst Connecticut Media
Some New Canaan parents of young children who oppose the change to school start times said that they have not been properly informed about the changes by New Canaan Public School officials.
School officials disagreed, saying the district has made attempts to inform them properly.
“There is tremendous support for our education system but right now (that) also comes with a lack of trust, outrage and disbelief of our town’s actions,” parent Jennifer Dalipi told Hearst Connecticut Media. ....

Proponents of a referendum say they have “more than enough” signatures to register the intent to referendum, which would overturn a vote taken by Town Council to stop the changes to school start times.
Supporters of the referendum have collected more than 50 signatures in just one day to register with the town clerk, which is the initial step called for by Town Charter Section C4-16. ....

Efforts are being made by opponents to earlier start times for grade school students to hold a referendum to overturn school start time changes.
Earlier grade school start times comes as a consequence of later start times for New Canaan High School students.
The referendum awaits the first step, having language crafted for “a notice of intent to petition,” which needs to be signed by at least 50 electors of the town to be filed in the town clerk’s office. ....

While we are advocates of building a new, modernized New Canaan Library, we are also in favor of protecting and repurposing the 1913 Library Building, an historic and architecturally significant connection to New Canaan’s past. The two buildings can live side by side.
Why would the NCL demolish the 1913 building and make a “town green” overlooking a parking lot and the most accident-prone corner in New Canaan? In the process, the NCL is erasing a cultural landmark that means so much to so many, and is creating a hugely divisive issue that will affect its own fundraising efforts going forward. ....
