The Indiana House on Wednesday affirmed the Senate’s final version of a bill to change how the county has picked its Superior Court judges for nearly a half-century, giving the governor and county commissioners more power. The bill next moves to Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb’s desk. Its sponsor, Rep. Mike Aylesworth, R-Hebron, had told a House committee in February that Holcomb’s office had asked for the changes, but the governor’s spokeswoman, Rachel Hoffmeyer, has repeatedly denied that ever happened. “He will review it,” Hoffmeyer told The Tribune in an email, declining to elaborate.

SOUTH BEND — After months of legal hang-ups, St. Joseph County will soon have a new Superior Court judge. Stephanie Steele, currently an attorney for the city of South Bend, was appointed by Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb last week to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Jane Woodward Miller at the end of last year. Steele earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and a law degree from Arizona State University, according to a release from the governor’s office. Steele was a deputy county prosecutor from 2010 to 2015 and has worked as an attorney for South Bend since then.

Holcomb today announced Stephanie Steele as his appointment to the St. Joseph County Superior Court. Steele will succeed Judge Jane Woodward Miller who retired at the end of her term on Dec. 31, 2020, but remained on the bench as a senior judge. Since 2015, Steele has served the City of South Bend, first as assistant city attorney and then beginning in 2017 as corporation counsel. From 2010-2015, she served as a deputy prosecutor for St. Joseph County. Steele earned an undergraduate degree from University of Michigan and a law degree from Arizona State University.
