Basingstoke author celebrates release of debut book about Jane Austen and her best friend Martha Lloyd

“IT IS a truth universally acknowledged that having your debut book come out in lockdown, when there are no bookshops open, is a bit of a journey to say the least.” Those are the words of a Basingstoke author who is celebrating the release of her debut book, which tells the story of the borough’s own Jane Austen, and her firm friendship of more than 30 years with a woman called Martha Lloyd. Zoe Wheddon began her journey with Jane Austen in the summer of 2017, when she and her daughter decided to visit every one of the Basingstoke Art Book Bench Trail’s Jane Austen benches.

ITV ready to make second series of Sanditon as rival drama Bridgeton sees roaring success

But the Jane Austen Society is not happy. The custodians of everything about the great English novelist have said Sanditon would have no claim to Jane Austen in a second series. Asked if Bridgerton would influence the amount of sex in Sanditon, Maureen Stiller, the society s honorary secretary, said: Since neither a prospective second series of Sanditon nor Bridgerton can claim any connection whatsoever with Jane Austen s writings, I think in those circumstances the programme commissioners are better placed than the Jane Austen Society to determine what their audience s taste is likely to be for either. But, she was asked, would the society approve of a second Sanditon season?

Former home of Jane Austen needs urgent repair work

Former home of Jane Austen needs urgent repair work THE former home of Jane Austen in Hampshire is set for “urgent” repair work. A grant of £85,000 has been awarded for repairs at the house in Chawton - where the author lived for eight years. It comes as the site was found in need of urgent work including stripping and re-hanging the existing roofing tiles on the house, replacing leaking windows and stabilising the structures of other heritage buildings on the site. The total cost of the work is estimated to be in the region of £170,000, it has been revealed. But £85,000 will come from Hampshire County Council as the authority awarded a grant to the Jane Austen’s House Museum.
