Gainesville artists gaze toward the Other Side Bill Dean It’s been a year now since the COVID-19 shutdown began an extremely bleak period for Gainesville musicians, who along with the rest of the country suddenly found themselves facing new realities unique to their own livelihoods and prospects, or lack thereof. Despite the mass cancellations of gigs and a general unplugging of all live performances at the time, some musicians explored other ways of coping, including playing livestream shows from their homes or inside venues bereft of live audiences. Still others performed in music videos – including two in Gainesville, “On the Other Side” and “The New Normal” – that addressed the pandemic head-on and brought together groups of musicians near and afar who could have only imagined playing together without them. ....
