YA adaptations from book to screen are nothing new for Hollywood, but Netflix’s
Shadow and Bone first piqued my interest when the main cast announcement was shared a little over a year ago. The reason why I was drawn in by an adaptation of books I had never heard of at the time was simple: The protagonist, Alina Starkov, would be changed from white to half-Asian.

Shadow and Bone and are left blankly staring at your television with questions upon questions about the loose ends left by the finale. On the good news side of things, Alina Starkov found strength in her powers and defeated Ben Barnesâ Darkling (for now), but thereâs so much more to keep us wondering as we wait for a second season to be picked up by Netflix â including Alina and Genyaâs friendship being on the rocks.
In between the triangle that had us looking back and forth between Alinaâs childhood bestie Mal and the Darklingâs villainous plans becoming known, the Sun Summoner found solace in Genya Safin, the Little Palaceâs tailor who got her ready for her royal appearances. Like many fans, some of my favorite scenes were between Jessie Mei Liâs Alina and Daisy Headâs Genya as their friendship flourished. Until⦠it didnât.

All the books take place within the same world, just in different locations and separate timelines. One of the more fascinating decisions made for the Netflix adaptation is the plan to combine the disparate narratives of
Shadow and Bone with
Six of Crows. As much as I enjoyed the main trilogy, the
Six of Crows books are my favorites, so the idea of remixing the material is particularly intriguing.
The rather distinct setting for
Shadow and Bone is Ravka, something of a fantasy analog for early 1800s Russia. Ravka has long struggled with the countries bordering it, Fjerda in the North and Shu Han in the South, but it’s the literal black cloud hanging over the country that truly drives the story. Known as the Shadow Fold, this swath of near-impenetrable darkness has not only divided the country of Ravka for hundreds of years, but also happens to be home to many monstrous creatures.
