Dillard University receives $1 million from the Ray Charles Foundation

OffBeat Magazine Dillard University receives $1 million from the Ray Charles Foundation The Ray Charles Foundation is continuing its longstanding relationship with Dillard University with a $1 million grant. The grant will continue to support the University’s Ray Charles Program in African-American Material Culture which launched a food studies minor in the spring of 2020. Funds will also support scholarships for students participating in the program. Dillard University is a private four-year liberal arts historically black institution with a history dating back to 1869. “The Dillard University Ray Charles Program in African-American Material Culture is humbled and honored to receive a generous grant from the Ray Charles Foundation to continue to build on Ray Charles’ vision and mission to celebrate, preserve and document African-American material culture. A portion of the grant will also help us to provide scholarships to students enrolled in our new food studies minor,”

Edward L Buzz Palmer, Chicago organizer, activist, dead at 84

Provided Edward L. “Buzz” Palmer co-founded Chicago’s Afro-American Patrolmen’s League in 1968 and became a community activist who tried to connect people around the world who saw the Black struggle in America as an impetus for change. Mr. Palmer, a former cop who headed Chicago’s Sister Cities program during Mayor Harold Washington’s administration, died Sunday of prostate cancer at his South Shore home. He was 84. February 1, 2021 THE WASHINGTON POST – When Klancy Miller launched her fundraising campaign for For the Culture in December 2019, the food media world took notice. With the mission of “A magazine celebrating Black women and femmes in food”, it is believed to be the first of its kind dedicated to the task. Now, more than a year later, the inaugural issue has been printed and shipped to supporters – and is available for purchase online. “I’m feeling very excited. And, frankly, relieved,” Miller said. “And a little bit protective.” Both as a writer and consumer of food media, Miller, the magazine’s editor in chief, noticed a lack of coverage of people of colour in the mainstream for much of her career. And roughly four years ago, “Cherry Bombe asked me to guest edit an all-Black issue, which I found really intriguing”, Miller said.
