Dear DU community members,
I am pleased to announce that, after seven years of partnering with the University of Denver, the Latino Leadership Institute (LLI) will become an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit organization effective July 1, 2021. This transition will better allow the LLI to respond to the increasing national demand for Latino leadership.
While LLI’s operations, research and programming will be independent from the university, DU and the LLI are committed to an ongoing partnership that will enable them to continue working together, including: collaborating around people and leadership development for the Latino and BIPOC communities; engaging with DU faculty around diversity, equity and inclusion endeavors; and exploring partnership opportunities around Latino and BIPOC entrepreneurship and economics.

In honor of Karen Riley upon her departure as dean of the University of Denver’s Morgridge College of Education, Donne and Sue Fisher have given $2.5 million to DU to establish a scholarship fund. The Karen Riley Endowed Scholarship will support master’s students at Morgridge who are committed to teaching young children, and it carries on the Fishers’ longstanding commitment to early childhood education.
“We hope this scholarship can help teachers financially, particularly those who have the deepest need, as they train to teach the youngest children in our society,” says Donne Fisher. “Those teachers will go on to make a great difference. We are all better off when more children can receive a quality education.”
Del Mar Park, 312 Del Mar Circle, Aurora James Grevious and a bunch of kids who discovered an affinity for gardening in his backyard produce beds took their micro-farm to the next level last summer by organizing Rebel Marketplace, a monthly inner-city farmers’ market in Del Mar Park in Aurora. It s back for a second season, opening just in time for Mother’s Day, with fresh produce, plant starts, microgreens, mulch, baked goods and herbal remedies. See what’s in store here. And a bonus. Daily (except Tuesdays in May), 10 a.m. This free walking tour is back for a spring season, starting at the Colorado Capitol and winding through the heart of downtown Denver as it takes you past top sights and landmarks and shares the stories and history behind them. Tours are offered almost every day at 10 a.m.; although they re free, reservations are required (and they do come with a $2 ticketing fee). Sign up here.
