June 1, 2021 at 1:54 PM JERSEY CITY, NJ - While the unseasonable weather may have caused the turn-out for the Memorial Day services in Pershing Field to be smaller than in past years, the ceremony that included a posting of colors by the color guard of Vietnam Veterans of American, the pledge of allegiance, and the reading of names that allowed visitors to place a rose on the memorial graves, was no less meaningful.  One by one, attendees strode up the paved path to the gravestone set in place as a tribute near the Pershing Field pavilion, placing red roses before it in tribute to loved ones. Some visitors paused to salute. Some touched the cool stone with the tips of their fingers. Others hurried away, choked with emotion.

Thomas Murphy, rector of the Church of St. Paul and Incarnation, has accepted a new assignment as pastor of an Episcopalian church in suburban Maryland.  Murphy, a Jersey City native who was a parishioner at the Duncan Avenue church before entering the seminary 20 years ago, became rector of the then St. Paul’s in Bergen, in 2013. He had previously served as assistant pastor at Grace Church in Madison, and also spent a year as a university chaplain in Gainesville, Fla.

The appointment will be effective July 1, 2021. HCCC President Dr. Chris Reber recommended the appointment, in consultation with the Board of Trustees Executive Committee, based on Mr. Pujols’ leadership experience; support of the College’s nationally distinctive diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives; and feedback from many members of the College community.
