Superintendent Maureen Binienda Greenfield Commonwealth Virtual School TEC Connections Academy

WORCESTER – Citing lack of interest, the school department has shelved plans to open a virtual academy this fall. According to Superintendent Maureen Binienda, as of Tuesday only 43 families had shown interest in the proposed online school, which would have been for seventh- and eighth-graders. The district was aiming to enroll 125 students. “I think people have just had it with remote learning, and just want their kids to be back in school,” she said, referring to the online schooling model Worcester had for most of this year for all its students during the pandemic. “Maybe this isn’t just the right time for it.”

WORCESTER – With students and staff out of the building as of last Friday, the final few days for South High Community School are at hand. From Monday until June 18, the school department will be stripping the Apricot Street facility of its remaining salvageable items, from tables and chairs to athletic trophies and other mementos. The district will then sever power to the building after June 18, and turn the school over to its contractor for demolition, according to Superintendent Maureen Binienda. At that point, the school system will officially be dependent on completion of the new South High, which is under construction just feet away from the old school, in time for the start of the new school year in late August.

Worcester school officials encouraged by improved grad, dropout rates

WORCESTER – School Committee members on Thursday were encouraged by the district’s latest graduation and dropout rate improvements, in particular by the better results for the system’s English language learners. School officials consequently floated the theory that ELLs’ success stemmed in part from the state’s sidelining of the MCAS graduation requirement for those students last spring because of the pandemic. Committee member Tracy O’Connell Novick moved for the district to formally testify to the state that Worcester’s improved ELL graduation and dropout rates speak to the “artificial barrier” created by the MCAS, and that those students would be better served by a different evaluation to determine their readiness to leave school.
