Andrew Cuomo proclaimed he was opening up New York State much more as of May 19 with the state lifting capacity limits for businesses like retail stores, restaurants, gyms, salons, places of worship and more, some business owners pointed out it really has relatively little impact because of the state maintaining 6 foot social distancing guidelines as per the CDC.  2 On Your Side checked on how this would filter down to businesses like gyms, which were especially hard hit in the pandemic.

Soho Buffalo, with a few exceptions, has been closed since November, when the governor instituted what was at the time a 10 p.m. curfew for bars and restaurants. This past weekend, owner Jay Manno said he did finally open the doors. The only reason we opened was because I have a dozen or so really good strong employees that I was concerned with losing, Manno said. He said because a large portion of Soho s business is as a nightclub, it didn t make fiscal sense to stay open even as the curfew moved to 11 p.m. and then midnight. Wednesday, he got news the governor is finally planning to lift it altogether.

As we get closer to summer and more places are reopening here in Western New York, there s a better chance now that you ll be able to enjoy a meal at your favorite bar or restaurant with fewer restrictions. The state announced Wednesday that its midnight curfew for bars and restaurants will go away next month, while state lawmakers also rolled back the mandate that you have to purchase food if you want to buy alcohol.

Outdoor Bills watch parties to return to Chippewa Street this Sunday

Two establishments within Buffalo s Chippewa District have the go-ahead to host outdoor Party on the Patio events during Sunday evening s AFC Championship game between the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs. Soho Buffalo and the Rec Room have been given permits to hold outdoor events. Soho owner Jay Manno says a similar event two weeks ago went well, with patrons respecting guidelines including distancing. Still, he has added security for Sunday s game. He adds that his business actively makes sure those in attendance continue to follow guidelines, especially when the game gets exciting. Signage hangs outside Soho Buffalo in advance of Sunday s AFC Championship football game between the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs. Soho and the Rec Room have been given permission to host an outdoor watching party on Chippewa Street, by reservations only. The winner of the game advances to the Super Bowl.

That includes a court decision that struck down state restrictions on indoor dining and an overall shift back to the less restrictive Yellow Zone for the rest of the state. Some are also looking ahead to future prospects.
