School districts in West Virginia have more than $540 million through the American Rescue Plan to spend specifically for things like hiring more teachers, supporting existing ones, renovating buildings to create better airflow, and even to hire more school counselors. Education reporter Liz McCormick spoke with Jefferson County middle school counselor Jen Mills over Skype to learn about her experience during the pandemic and about the social-emotional needs of students, teachers and school personnel going forward. ....
There is a stack of paperwork at the Redstone Tax Center. âWe are busier than ever,â Rachael Yeoman, the tax center manager, said. âAnd our dedicated volunteers are making sure we get everything done.â The center provides free tax preparation services for the military community but this year things are different because of the pandemic. The center opened Feb. 1 as a drop-off only site that serves active duty and retired military and their families. It still depends on its dedicated volunteers. The center closed in March 2020 because of the pandemic but received authorization from the Garrison commander to open this year with a smaller group of volunteers. ....
