MWSS seeks clarity over quarterly tariff adjustment

Published June 3, 2021, 4:19 PM The Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System-Regulatory Office (MWSS-RO) is still clarifying with the government panel that revised concession agreements between MWSS and water concessionaires if the foreign currency differential adjustments (FCDA) can still be implemented for the third quarter this year. In a text exchange, MWSS Chief Regulator Patrick Ty said it is not yet clear whether or not the FCDA adjustments for the third quarter and fourth quarter of this year can still be applied amid the issuance of the revised CAs (RCA) between the government and its two concessionaires, Maynilad Water Services Inc. and Manila Water Company, Inc.

Negotiations on new water deals yet to start

Published March 15, 2021, 7:00 AM The Philippine government is yet to start negotiations with water concessionaires, Maynilad Water Services Inc. and Manila Water Company Inc., regarding their new concession agreements (CA) with Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS). In a text exchange, Maynilad President and Chief Executive Officer Ramoncito S. Fernandez said the government is supposed to consult with concessionaires regarding the updated water contracts, but this is yet to happen. “We expect that a fair and objective review will be concluded at the soonest possible time,” Fernandez further said. For her part, Jennifer Rufo, head of corporate communications at Maynilad, said no schedule has been set yet as to when concessionaires will be consulted about their contracts.

Maynilad s 3 new sewage treatment plants set for completion this year

Published March 6, 2021, 5:30 AM The construction of three new Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) owned by Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad), which cost P7.15 billion to build, is all targeted for completion this year. These STPs currently being constructed in Barangays Cupang and Tunasan in Muntinlupa, and in Barangay Marulas in Valenzuela can treat up to 126,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day. Combined, the new facilities can provide sewerage service to almost 700,000 residents in the cities of Muntinlupa and Valenzuela.   Maynilad engineers inspect the aeration tank at the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) currently being constructed in Cupang, Muntinlupa. Maynilad is targeting to complete within 2021 its construction of three new STPs, which can provide sewerage service to almost 700,000 residents in the cities of Muntinlupa and Valenzuela. These new STPs can treat up to 126,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day, thus helping to reduce pollution load in the Manila Bay.

Published January 8, 2021, 5:30 PM Despite the persistence of COVID-19 pandemic, which has been causing an increase in water consumption, government authorities and utility firms are confident that there will be no water crisis in the coming months, especially in summer. “We can assure of sufficient water supply for summer this year,” Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) Administrator Emmanuel Salamat said in a text exchange.   This is because of the high level of water in Angat Dam, which is almost 9 meters higher than last year, he said. The 54-year old Angat Dam currently releases 4,000 million liters of water per day (mld), supplying 97 percent of Metro Manila’s water needs.
