TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Five years ago, a diminutive teenage girl with striking brown eyes stood shackled and weeping in a Tampa courtroom.
Jennifer Carvajal admitted she was drunk early one morning a few weeks shy of her 17th birthday. She admitted that she’d blown through a red light and slammed into another car, killing the driver. She admitted she’d made a terrible mistake and vowed to become a better person.
“One person paid the ultimate price for my selfish behavior,” she said.

TAMPA, Fla. - A woman accused of driving while intoxicated, crashing into a Tampa dealership lot, and killing one of her passengers will remain behind bars at the Falkenburg Road Jail after a judge decided to have her held without bond.
Jennifer Carvajal had a detention hearing Monday afternoon, where prosecutors argued that letting her out while her case is pending would be a mistake. For the 24-year-old, this isn’t the first time she’s been arrested for driving drunk and causing an accident that resulted in a death.

The state asked that Jennifer Carvajal be held in jail pending trial. A defense attorney did not contest the request.
