Frederick County executive race heats up as Hough and Hagen spar

The race for Frederick county executive is only in its early stages but it has already begun to heat up.
On Monday, Sen. Michael Hough (Frederick and Carroll), who is the only Republican in the race, ripped one of the Democratic candidates as “far-left.” The criticism comes after Frederick County Council member Kai Hagen described Hough’s campaign mention of not wanting Frederick County to become akin to a “Montgomery County, North,” as a “dog whistle” for things Montgomery County is commonly known for such as political liberalism, racial diversity, and urban development.

Maryland Senate Minority Whip Michael J. Hough (R) announced Monday that he will forego a re-election bid and instead run for Frederick County executive in 2022.
“Voters in Frederick County will face a crucial choice in next year’s election. What kind of county do we want to be? Do we continue to be a unique and wonderful community where people are proud to live, work, and raise a family? Or do we become Montgomery County North, with overcrowding, traffic gridlock, crime and high taxes,” Hough asked in the campaign announcement.

An external auditing agency found no evidence of fraud related to financial statements from June, County Council members heard at their meeting Tuesday.
Bill Seymour and Christopher Lehman, engagement partner and audit partner at SB & Company, said their accounting firm audited financial statements from last year for the county, along with the 9-1-1 trust fund and the Bell Court Apartments in Woodsboro.
Although the financial statement audit conducted was not a fraud audit, the auditing team still maintained a âhealthy skepticismâ when completing its work, Seymour said.
Seymour thanked county officials â including County Finance Director Lori Depies and Accounting Director Melanie Thom â for their assistance and flexibility during the pandemic.
