On Monday, the board approved a one-year contract with Mobility 360 calling for the Weirton business to establish an app through which school officials may communicate to parents and others, redesign the school district’s website, create an overall brand for the district and other measures to raise awareness of its schools’ offerings and accomplishments.

Warren Scott WELLSBURG Leaders of the West Virginia National Guard’s Future Leaders Program have asked Brooke County school officials to consider offering it to students at Brooke High School and the Brooke County Alternative Learning Center. West Virginia National Guard Lt. Col. Dave Eldridge told the board the program isn’t intended to recruit future members but to foster personal growth in students through a program focused on leadership, citizenship, life skills and military science.

Staff writer COVID-19 ISSUES — Adapting to issues raised by the coronavirus were a recurring subject at Monday’s Brooke County school board meeting. WELLSBURG The Brooke County Board of Education Monday approved a monetary incentive for staff to announce their retirements earlier and discussed several issues spurred by the pandemic. The board agreed to pay $500 to full-time staff members who submit written notification by March 1 of their intention to retire after the current school year. The offer doesn’t include those in state-funded positions who already were eligible for the incentive through the state. Superintendent Jeffrey Crook said the move is “the equitable thing to do” while helping to alleviate decisions related to staff cuts. Deidra Parr, the school district’s treasurer, said knowing staff who will be retiring may lower the number of staff facing termination and reduce the need for paid attorneys who represent the board at hearings on the propose

Brooke BOE reverses course after order by state board | News, Sports, Jobs

Staff writer WELLSBURG At a special meeting Friday, the Brooke County Board of Education voted to return to a mix of in-person and remote learning next week, reversing its decision earlier this week to keep students home for remote learning for the remainder of the month. All cited an order Wednesday by the West Virginia Board of Education that all students in grades K-8 return to some level of in-person classroom instruction and for those in grades 9-12 return unless their counties have been designated red for COVID-19 on a state map maintained by the state Department of Health and Human Resources.
