JEFFERSON COUNTY, Texas On Monday, Democrats in the Texas Legislature left the state to revolt against and block a vote on voting legislation.
The bills being considered would create new identification requirements for people voting by mail and block local election officials from sending vote-by-mail applications to those who have not requested one.
The bills would also restrict polling hours, ban drive-thru voting and extend hours during early voting.
Some Southeast Texas voters said regardless of whether the voting law is enacted or not, their voices will be heard.

BEAUMONT, Texas Texas jails and prisons are both overcrowded. Judges and lawyers are calling it a COVID-19 pandemic side effect.
They say Texas citizens are the ones paying to keep inmates behind bars longer than normal, but the trouble is twofold. County jails are full of defendants awaiting trial, and Texas prisons are housing people who have already been cleared for parole.

WINTERSVILLE Wintersville joined other local communities undergoing major transitions when Council President Robbie Martin was sworn in as interim mayor.
The action came on Friday following the resignation in April of Bob Gale, who held the position for 13 years.
Martin also is no stranger to the village.
A lifelong Wintersville resident, he has served on council for close to 20 years, during which he has been council president 10 years, often alternating with Councilman Bob Merriman.

STEUBENVILLE Those among the new slate of officers for the Jefferson County Republican Party hope to draw voters of diverse backgrounds and cultures by stressing the common goals and values they share.
“This area still needs jobs. And like a lot of areas, we have a drug problem,” said the Rev. Nate Freeman, who said he and other leaders of the Jefferson County GOP want to find solutions to such problems while supporting values, including the sanctity of life and the importance of family, held by many Ohio Valley residents.
