More than 50 local high school students attended Weatherford Collegeâs annual Upward Bound summer academy focused on providing higher education access to future first-generation college students from economically disadvantaged families.
Students live on campus during the six-week program and attend classes ranging from lab-based science to foreign language.
âThis experience increases these studentsâ likelihood of enrolling and graduating from post-secondary institutions,â said Jeff Kahlden, WC Upward Bound director.
In addition to core courses like math, science and English, students also completed courses in college readiness, American Sign Language, financial literacy and computer literacy. The curriculum is built around longer classroom time and fewer classes allowing student

LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 15, 2021) “What do you want to be when you grow up?”
As children, we rarely have a good answer for the adults who ask us that question.
As a young girl navigating small-town life in Thomson, Georgia, Savannah Lewis certainly didn’t have the answer. But she always had a strong interest in math and science more specifically, a fascination with electricity and astronomy.
Lewis often wondered, “how can I channel that passion into purpose?”
“Because there are hardly any Black engineers in society, it’s more difficult for Black kids to see that as a possibility for themselves,” she said. “There are kids that have no idea what they are passionate about, because they don’t have the resources available to be exposed to it.”
Nominations for the Rosa Parks Human Rights Achievement awards are now being accepted. Every year two recipients are selected to receive the award. One award is given to a recipient who has a significant history of commitment and achievement in the field of human rights for Latah County. A Junior Award is presented to a high school or university student, or some other young person who has shown promise in the field of human rights.
The award is named for Rosa Parks, who refused to sit in the back of the bus as African Americans were required to do in Alabama. Her courage started the Montgomery bus boycott, which marked a great stride forward for human rights and integration.
Floral artistry goes on display
Angie Ng of Orewa won the Junior award and Colour award for her entry.
Some spectacular floral art pieces, some several metres high, went on display in Orewa recently.
The Auckland Area Designer of the Year competition, which was themed Coastal Capers, was hosted at the Orewa Baptist Church by the Hibiscus Coast Floral Art Club on December 1 and 2.
Floral artists came from around Auckland to take part and there were plenty of interested spectators through the doors when the displays opened to the public on the second day.
One of the Hibiscus Coast club’s members, Orewa gardener Angie Ng, won the Junior Award as well as the Colour Award – Angie was particularly pleased as it is the first time she has entered the competition.
