By Beverly Van Buskirk, Lifestyles editor LE MARS — A Le Mars Community Middle School seventh grader has been selected as an alternate to the National History Day competition in June. Ian DeRuyter advanced as a Junior Alternate in the Junior Historical Paper category for Nationals. The competition was held virtually this year. This year’s theme is “Communication in History: The Key to Understanding.” DeRutyer said his topic was on propaganda during World War II. He titled his paper: “Nazi Lies and American Truth: The Influence of Propaganda on World War II.” “I chose this topic because I saw it on a list of recommended topics and I thought it would be interesting to research,” DeRuyter said.
