The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was landmark legislation that required decades of actions—and setbacks—to achieve.
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin. When it was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on July 2, 1964, it was a major victory for the civil rights movement in its battle against unjust Jim Crow laws that marginalized Black Americans. It took years of activism, courage, and the leadership of Civil Rights icons from Martin Luther King, Jr. to the Little Rock Nine to bring the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to fruition. Judy Richardson is both a maker and a recorder of history.
She was actively involved in the civil-rights movement in the South in the 1960s, and went on to be instrumental in creating the award-winning, 14-part PBS documentary series “Eyes on the Prize” in the 1980s, of which she was a co-producer.
She will be taking part in a virtual conversation open to the public about both her experiences and the television series with Hasan Jeffries of the Ohio State University history department on Friday. It is part of the Center for Historical Research s “1619 and Beyond: Explorations in Atlantic Slavery and its American Legacy” program. ....
