(George Johnston Daily News) I’m not doing much gardening this year mostly watering; so, with this article I’ve decided to review and update facts about garden club. The first garden club in America was founded in January 1891 by The Ladies’ Garden Club of Athens, Georgia. On May 1, 1929, thirteen states became charter members of National Garden Clubs, Inc. at an organizational meeting in Washington, D.C. Since then Garden Club has grown to all 50 states and the District of Columbia with more than 200,000 members. Garden Club has 70 affiliates within the US and 300 international affiliates.

I like fiction. I even know some talented people who make money composing it. But as a nonfiction writer, when I go into schools I am sad that the books students choose to read are almost always fiction. A child thinks: Nonfiction? You mean textbooks. Ugh. That s supposed to be changing. The Common Core State Standards, which have had a marked effect on teaching lately, say nonfiction is essential. Children need a steady diet of it to accumulate the background knowledge that will allow them to recognize more words as they learn to read.
