Trans woman Iris Santos murdered in Houston

Houston police say they are continuing their investigation into the April 23 murder of transgender woman Iris Santos, 22.
According to reports, Santos was sitting at a picnic table outside of a Chick-fil-A restaurant in the 8600 block of Westheimer Road at about 9:30 p.m. when an unknown suspect approached and opened fire, striking several times. The restaurant manager called emergency services; Santos was transported to a local hospital where she was declared dead.

Chyna Carrillo, 24, a trans Latinx woman, was slain in Wilmington, Pennsylvania, on February 18. According to a report in the
New Castle News, Carrillo was brutally beaten to death with a blunt object by Juan Carter Hernandez, 33, a military deserter recently released from prison where he was serving eight to 10 years for the murder of his wife in 2011. Carrillo’s killing is the 7th known transgender victim of violence in 2021, setting a pace to become the most deadly ever for the trans community.

After a devastating year for the trans community in 2020, yet another trans woman of color has been killed in 2021. Chyna Carrillo, a 24-year-old Latinx trans woman, was reportedly murdered in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania last Thursday, making her death the seventh known trans homicide in the first two months of this year.
According to the local newspaper
New Castle News, Carrillo was beaten to death by Juan Carter Hernandez, a 33-year-old Marine Corps deserter who previously served time in prison for murdering his wife. Police officers responding to the scene ordered Hernandez to cease. When he refused to do so, Hernandez was shot and killed at the scene by one of the responding police officers, who has been placed on administrative leave pending investigation.
