As the fight over demolition costs of an historic downtown building continues, the price for the owner is falling – slightly.
The City of Battle Creek is seeking payment from Bryant DeBolt for demolition costs of the Binder Building.
The 120-year-old, six-story sandstone tower at 34 W. Michigan Ave. was demolished in December after the city determined it might collapse and was a danger.
It was declared a nuisance and after a hearing, Calhoun County Circuit Court Judge Sarah Lincoln permitted the city to proceed with demolition.
The city is now seeking payment from DeBolt for the costs of removing the tower and making some repairs to the remaining structure, which DeBolt has owned since 1987 and is using it for storage.
