The Day - Day reporting slanted to help Bumgardner win in Groton City - News from southeastern Connecticut

Published April 01. 2021 5:19PM  Are Day reporters a political candidate s press wing? As a city resident, the fawning journalism by columnist David Collins and Staff Writer Kimberly Drelich showed zero objectivity and promoted one candidate in the City of Groton Democratic mayoral primary. Old white guy  Collins first sentence of his January 9 column says, “I don’t know Aundré Bumgardner well, but I know enough about him to be certain that he would make an excellent mayor for the City of Groton.” He completely discredited himself by saying this! If Collins did an ounce of research, he would have found Bumgardner is unemployed, which was not revealed by The Day until just before the primary. Why did it take months for this critical information to come out?

The Day - Candidates should stay in current positions - News from southeastern Connecticut

Published March 03. 2021 4:18PM  The City of Groton Democrat primary is polarized. The endorsed incumbent and challenger have surrogates citing age, education, and experience as factors supporting or rejecting each candidate. A fair comparison is necessary based on their current positions as our elected officials. In fiscal-year 2020-2021 budget sessions, both pledged to not increase taxes on citizens already suffering the COVID crisis. Mayor Hedrick and the City Council did not increase taxes in this annual budget. Councilor Bumgardner supported using fund balance to not increase taxes. However, the council unanimously changed course, increasing taxes on all residents this fiscal year despite previous statements.
